Are you a man providing care for a spouse or aging parent? Do you find it difficult to open up about your feelings or emotional stress?
If so, you are not alone. Forty percent of family caregivers of adults are men, which equates to 16 million male caregivers in the United States.
Dr. Jean Accius, of the AARP Public Policy Institute, discusses with Dr. Merle who these male caregivers are, and the special issues they face in these non-traditional roles.
Robert Hawkins is the facilitator of the men’s caregiver support group at SarahCare Stark County. Once a caregiver to his mother-in-law and then to his wife, Hawkins discusses ways to cope with the stress and unique challenges and issues male caregivers encounter in caring for women.
